Ottawa Senators forward Jarkko Ruutu was suspended by the NHL on Wednesday for two games without pay for biting Buffalo Sabres enforcer Andrew Peters. After nine months on the sidelines, Mats Sundin was set to make his Vancouver Canucks debut Wednesday night against the Edmonton Oilers. The 37-year-old former captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs skated with the Canucks in the morning, then said he was ready for his NHL return. "I feel good, the body feels good, so I'm ready to go," Sundin said in the visitors' dressing room at Rexall Place.


Maple Leafs acquire F May from Ducks (AP)
The Maple leafs acquired hard-hitting forward Brad May from the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday for a conditional 2010 sixth-round draft pick. The deal was Brain Burke's first since becoming Toronto's president and general manager in late November. "Brad will provide character, toughness, and he is a proven winner," Burke said in a statement.

Whether by blowout or shootout, the Washington Capitals needed a win over the "we don't like them" Philadelphia Flyers to give their winning streak a serious sense of accomplishment. The Minnesota Wild showed why they're the NHL's top defensive team by completely shutting down the league's best offensive club. Niklas Backstrom stopped 28 shots for his second straight shutout and fifth of the season to lead Wild to a 1-0 win over Boston, handing the Bruins their first shutout of the season on Tuesday night.

With his team down three against the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday night, New Jersey coach Brent Sutter pulled his goalie when the Devils got a power play with about 9 minutes left in the game. The catch was that move put extra pressure on his son, Brandon, who was trying to kill the penalty for the Hurricanes.
